Mekelle, capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, has again become a focal point in the renewed fighting.

A militia allied with the federal government said it had taken control of Mekelle Alula Aba Nega Airport and was moving to clear the city.

Reuters reported on Saturday that the claim could not immediately be independently verified and that Ethiopia’s Prime Minister’s Office had not immediately responded to requests for comment.

Fighting Reopens Old Wounds

The latest confrontation follows a major escalation that began in September, reviving memories of Ethiopia’s devastating 2020–2022 Tigray war.

Tigrayan forces and their allies launched a significant offensive against federal forces in late September, while Ethiopian government troops and allied militias subsequently mounted a counteroffensive.

Reuters described the current escalation as the most serious since the earlier civil war.

Airport Becomes Strategic Battleground

Airports are particularly important in the Tigray conflict because they provide military, humanitarian and civilian access to the region.

The reported battle for Mekelle’s airport therefore carries significance beyond aviation.

Control of the facility can affect the movement of personnel and supplies while also influencing humanitarian access and communications with the outside world.

Earlier fighting had already resulted in the suspension of flights to several airports in northern Ethiopia.

Ethiopia-Eritrea Relations Deteriorate

The conflict has also produced a serious diplomatic crisis between Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea.

Ethiopia accused Eritrea of supporting the opposition alliance involved in the fighting. Eritrea rejected the allegations and, on October 1, announced that it was severing diplomatic ties with Ethiopia following Addis Ababa’s decision to close its embassy in Asmara and expel Eritrean diplomats.

Ethiopia has also accused other regional countries of involvement, although those governments have denied the allegations.

The deteriorating relations have increased concern that an internal Ethiopian conflict could become entangled with wider Horn of Africa rivalries.

African Union Calls For Restraint

The African Union has urged Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to exercise restraint and avoid actions or rhetoric that could further destabilise the region.

The AU’s intervention reflects concerns that continued escalation could extend beyond Ethiopia’s borders.

Humanitarian Concerns

The renewed violence also raises concerns for civilians who have already endured displacement, food insecurity and disruption of essential services.

The previous Tigray conflict produced a major humanitarian crisis, and renewed fighting risks reopening humanitarian corridors and putting civilians in areas of active conflict at further risk.

Images from the earlier war show the scale of displacement experienced by Tigrayan communities.
