UgandaToday: “Forgiveness Is Freedom” – Joe Ghartey Urges NPP Unity Ahead of 2028 Elections

Senior Ghanaian politician Joe Ghartey has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to close ranks and rally behind Mahamudu Bawumia as the party prepares for the 2028 Ghanaian general elections.
Ghartey, a former Attorney-General of Ghana and Minister of Justice, made the appeal during a reconciliation forum held at the Pempamsie Hotel, urging party members to forgive past grievances and unite for the greater good of the party.
The veteran lawmaker, who remains the longest-serving Member of Parliament for the Essikado-Ketan Constituency, specifically appealed to party supporters in the Central Region to work collectively to strengthen the NPP’s electoral prospects.
A Call for Unity and Reconciliation
The forum in Cape Coast brought together NPP executives, grassroots organisers, and party activists in what organisers described as an open and soul-searching engagement aimed at repairing strained relationships within the party.
Delivering the keynote address, Ghartey emphasised humility, introspection, and collective responsibility as the pillars of party unity.
“None of us is perfect. We all have made mistakes. But if we do not forgive one another, we are prisoners of our own grievances,” he told the gathering.
According to him, unresolved tensions within the party could weaken its electoral fortunes if not addressed decisively.
Biblical Lessons on Forgiveness
Drawing from the Bible, Ghartey referenced Gospel of John, recounting the story of the adulterous woman in Chapter 8, where Jesus challenges a crowd preparing to stone her by urging that whoever is without sin should cast the first stone.
He also cited Gospel of Matthew Chapter 18, which teaches believers to forgive “seventy-seven times,” a message he interpreted as a call for limitless forgiveness among party members.
“Forgiveness is freedom,” Ghartey stressed, adding that reconciliation must begin at the personal level before it can translate into broader party cohesion.
“We have to forgive ourselves first, then extend that forgiveness to others. Only then can we move forward as a party,” he said.
Engagement With Bawumia
Ahead of the Central Region engagement, Ghartey also paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at his residence in Accra.
During the meeting, he congratulated Bawumia on his recent political successes. The two leaders reportedly held what was described as a “deep and fruitful discussion” focused on strategies to strengthen party unity and energise the NPP’s grassroots base ahead of future electoral contests.
