Ugandatoday: Teen Killed by Girlfriend’s Father in Mabanda, Wakiso District
Wakiso, Uganda – Tragedy struck Mabanda Cell, Gombe Division, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District on Valentine’s Day (14 February 2026) when 18-year-old student Martin Bukenya of Hillside Secondary School, Matugga, was beaten to death in a brutal assault by Musasizi Herbert Lumu, a 41-year-old resident of Mabanda village.
Love Turned to Lament
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the fatal incident occurred at around 8:00 p.m., when Lumu returned home and found Bukenya inside his house with his 14-year-old daughter in what residents described as “compromising romantic circumstances.”
Onlookers say the relationship was well known in the community, and that Bukenya had visited the girl’s home frequently despite earlier warnings from Lumu and other local leaders to keep his distance. Neighbours recalled a meeting held in January after Lumu accused the young man of being inside his house with the girl, where Bukenya was sternly cautioned not to return.
Two-Hour Ordeal as Residents Watch
Villagers told reporters that once confronted, Lumu locked himself inside with Bukenya and began assaulting him with fists and other objects, continuing the attack for nearly two hours. Neighbours said they attempted to intervene — banging on doors and trying to break windows — but were unable to stop the assault as the house was locked from within. Residents described hearing cries for help throughout the violent confrontation.
By about 10:00 p.m., a neighbour finally smashed an indoor window panel and entered the room, only to find Bukenya already unconscious from the beating. Emergency responders were called, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward while being taken to a local clinic.

Suspect Arrested in Gulu
Immediately after the killing, Lumu fled the scene with his family and went into hiding. However, on 20 February 2026, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala confirmed that security agencies had arrested Lumu in Gulu District. He is currently in custody as investigations continue and will be arraigned in court on murder charges.
Police have appealed to the public to come forward with any additional information that may assist in the ongoing inquiry.
A Troubling Family History
Community members and local leaders expressed shock not only at the brutality of the killing, but also at what they described as the irony of Lumu’s actions. According to residents familiar with his background, Lumu himself impregnated the mother of his daughter when she was just 14 years old while he was 20 — a fact some say highlights deeper issues concerning parental conduct and attitudes toward youth relationships.
Call for Restraint and Guidance
The tragic death of Martin Bukenya has sparked renewed calls from community leaders and child protection advocates for parents and guardians to exercise restraint, counsel their teenagers constructively, and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“What happened here is deeply heartbreaking,” said one local official. “Disagreements, even those involving minors and parents, should always be handled through dialogue and, when necessary, the appropriate legal channels.”
Parents are urged to actively engage with their children’s relationships, educate them on safe and respectful behaviour, and seek support from teachers, counsellors, and police rather than resorting to violence.
