Masaka, Uganda — Uganda’s political and human rights landscape has been shaken once again after National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, visited Masaka Main Prison to check on his detained bodyguard, Eddie Mutwe — and walked away with a story that has left the nation numb with disbelief.
According to Kyagulanyi, the only good news was that Eddie Mutwe is still alive. What followed next were grim, graphic, and gut-wrenching details of state-sanctioned torture, allegedly orchestrated under the direction of President Yoweri Museveni’s son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
“Eddie is in unimaginable pain,” Kyagulanyi said. “They electrocuted him, waterboarded him, and crushed his manhood with a baton. They flogged him daily and forced him to kneel at gunpoint to pledge allegiance to Museveni.”
Mutwe’s family — including his mother, wife, and their eight-month-old baby — were present during the visit. The emotional weight of retelling his abuse became too heavy; at some point, he broke down, refusing to continue speaking.
“They cuffed his hands and legs, stomped on his arms until the metal ate into his flesh,” Kyagulanyi explained. “They stripped him, beat his feet until they swelled like elephantiasis, and injected him with unknown substances.”
Among the most chilling revelations was the use of a loudspeaker to mask his screams, the forced wearing of a Museveni T-shirt during captivity, and the mocking for not understanding Runyakore — which led to beatings for answering in Luganda.
“Each cry for help was drowned out. Each refusal to kneel was met with torture. His only crime? Believing in freedom.”
Mutwe is reportedly unable to walk unaided and suffers from trauma-induced insomnia, haunted by the faces of his torturers each time he closes his eyes.
Kyagulanyi insists that Eddie Mutwe, alongside other detained comrades — Achileo Kivumbi, Mugumya Gaddafi, and Wakabi Grace — should not be in jail at all.
“They committed no crime. They are political prisoners, tortured for standing on the side of justice and truth.”
The latest revelations now pile even more pressure on the Ugandan government, whose security apparatus continues to be accused of systemic human rights violations.
