Uganda TodayTRAGEDY ON THE ALTAR: Pastor Stabs Wife to Death During Church Service in Jinja

Jinja, Uganda – July 27, 2025 — A chilling act of domestic violence unfolded in the heart of a Sunday worship service at New Life Gospel Ministries when Pastor Peter Okello, 56, fatally stabbed his wife and ministry co-founder, Pastor Grace Okello, in full view of a horrified congregation.

What began as a seemingly ordinary church service quickly turned into a nightmare. According to eyewitnesses and police reports, Pastor Okello arrived dressed in his usual clerical robes and took his seat at the front pew without incident. Unknown to anyone, he had concealed two sharp knives beneath his garments.

Without warning, the pastor rose from his seat, walked up to the altar where his wife stood, and launched a brutal knife attack. Congregants screamed and fled in terror as the 52-year-old Pastor Grace was stabbed repeatedly in what police describe as a premeditated act of violence. She died instantly at the scene.

Moments later, Pastor Okello turned the knife on himself, slashing his own throat in a final act that left both him and his wife dead on the church floor.

The couple, who had been married for more than two decades, were well-known figures in the local Christian community. Together, they had built New Life Gospel Ministries from the ground up, turning it into one of Jinja’s most vibrant Pentecostal congregations. But behind the pulpit, police say, the couple had been grappling with escalating marital and leadership conflicts—particularly over church control and property disputes.

A note recovered from Pastor Okello’s personal Bible revealed a disturbing motive. In the handwritten message, believed to be a suicide note, he accused his wife of betrayal and ominously declared: “Today will be your last lie.”

Both bodies have been transferred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examinations as police conduct further investigations. The church has been sealed off as a crime scene, and forensic teams are collecting evidence.

The horrifying incident has sent shockwaves across Uganda, igniting urgent conversations about domestic violence, mental health, and the unseen struggles within religious leadership.

“It’s unimaginable that such a heinous act could happen in a place of worship, let alone among ministers of God,” said Reverend Simon Kasule of the Jinja Interfaith Council. “This is a wake-up call. We must not only condemn the act but also begin to actively support couples—especially leaders—who are silently struggling.”

Domestic violence experts and counseling professionals are also calling for stronger interventions in religious communities, emphasizing the importance of conflict resolution and emotional wellness even among clergy.

For the members of New Life Gospel Ministries, the sanctuary that once represented healing and hope is now marked by unspeakable tragedy.

As Uganda mourns yet another case of intimate partner violence turned fatal, the tragic deaths of Pastors Peter and Grace Okello serve as a harrowing reminder: unresolved personal conflict, when ignored, can erupt with devastating consequences—no matter how sacred the setting.
